How to Keep Your Pillows Fresh this Summer

How to Keep Your Pillows Fresh this Summer

As summer sets in and temperatures rise, we’re all likely to experience some nights of sweaty sleeping. You know, the ones when you’re struggling to fall asleep, and swapping your pillow to the cool side just isn’t going to cut it? Those are definitely a downside to balmy summer weather.

While sweating in your sleep is inevitable during the warmer months, there are things you can do to help. Make sure you’re using the right duvet tog for the temperature, opt for the most breathable bed linen possible, and above all, keep your sheets clean. Sweatier nights can wreak havoc on bedding, but we’ve got some tips on how to keep your pillows fresh and free from yellow stains this summer.

1. Clean your pillows regularly

Let’s get the obvious one out the way first. Sweat, dead skin cells, and dust mites can build up on pillows so it’s important to clean them at least once every six months, or ideally every season.

Most pillows can be cleaned in the washing machine on a gentle cycle, but always check the label for instructions.

For Merino wool pillows, simply hang them on the washing line four times a year to air. We don’t recommend washing or dry-cleaning our Merino wool bedding as it can be harsh on the natural fibres.

2. Get some pillow protectors

If you are prone to sweating (or drooling) in your sleep, it might be a good idea to use waterproof pillow protectors. These stop moisture from seeping into your pillow, which can lead to a build-up of bacteria and even the growth of mould and mildew!

You can easily remove pillow protectors to wash them regularly with the rest of your bedding.

3. Hang them outside to air

Airing your pillows outside is a good way to dry up any moisture and reduce odours. With summer underway, now is a great time to get your pillows out and hanging on the line. The sun’s UV rays can help reduce bacteria which is great for sweat-covered pillows.

4. Wash your pillowcases weekly

Whilst your pillows only need washing two to four times a year, your pillow covers should be washed as much as once a week.

Pillow covers typically take the brunt of most sweat so can quickly start to look dirty and get a bit smelly. Knowing how to wash, dry, and care for your bedding will keep your pillowcases looking and smelling fresh and it can also prolong the life of your pillows.

Kair's Signature Clothing Wash is infused with comforting Cedarwood, Amber and Iris fragrance. It’s guaranteed to leave your sheets smelling good long after the laundry load is complete!

5. Opt for moisture-wicking pillowcases

If you’re someone that sweats quite a lot in the summer months, then opting for moisture-wicking materials such as cotton or linen for your pillow covers is a smart choice. These types of materials can stop moisture from reaching your pillows, and they also have great temperature-regulating properties that will help keep you cool and reduce sweat.

6. Use bicarbonate of soda in between washes

Even if you’re washing your pillow four times a year, it will likely need a freshen-up in between, especially during the summer.

Bicarbonate of soda is a great DIY natural cleaning product for absorbing moisture and getting rid of smells, which makes it perfect for sweaty pillows. Sprinkle an even amount across your pillows and leave to sit for a couple of hours. Then use a vacuum cleaner with a small nozzle to hoover your pillow clean, making sure to remove all the residue.

Bicarbonate of soda is also handy for treating stains, including fake tan!

7. Invest in Merino wool pillows

Lastly, if your pillows are looking a bit tired or you’re finding them too hot in the heat, maybe it’s time for something new. Investing in some Merino wool pillows before the temperature really starts to increase will stand you in good stead for the rest of the season. Merino wool is thermo-regulating and moisture-wicking, giving you a cooler and drier night’s sleep in warmer temperatures.
