Known for its softness and warmth, brushed cotton bedding is the perfect companion for chilly winter nights. Its fleecy finish is great for cocooning and will keep you cosy and comfortable no matter how nippy it gets outside.
There are plenty of perks to this fuzzy fabric, but what exactly is brushed cotton bedding, how is it made, and what’s the difference between brushed cotton and conventional cotton? Here, we’re sharing everything you need to know about this supremely snug fabric.
What is brushed cotton and how is it made?
Brushed cotton, sometimes known as ‘flannelette’, is a woven cotton fabric that’s gently combed to create a softer, fluffier finish. Unlike conventional cotton, brushed cotton has a fuzzy feel, which is created using fine bristles to lift up the fibres from the yarn. These fluffed-up fibres give brushed cotton that extra cosiness, and the excess lint is removed from the fabric to create a smooth texture.

Our brushed cotton bedding at Piglet in Bed is woven from a blend of sustainably sourced cotton and TENCEL™ fibres. This gives it a buttery soft quality with a beautiful drape. It’s perfect for snuggling up to but has breathable properties so you don’t overheat.
What are the benefits of brushed cotton bedding?
There are lots of reasons why people reach for brushed cotton in the colder months. Brushed cotton bedding is undeniably snuggly, and it’s ideal for those wanting a warmer and cosier night’s sleep. That’s all thanks to the brushed fibres, which trap warm air to give the perfect level of insulation.
That doesn’t mean you compromise on breathability, though. The cotton and TENCEL™ blend in our brushed cotton bedding gives you the best of both worlds since it’s still breathable and wicks away moisture.

With its soft, soothing weave, brushed cotton is also known for its hypoallergenic qualities and is a good choice for people with sensitive skin.
Is brushed cotton warmer than cotton?
Compared to conventional cotton, brushed cotton has fluffier fibres that give it a fleecy texture. Brushed cotton bedding is still breathable like regular cotton, but it feels warmer against your skin than smoother, cool-to-the-touch cotton. Brushed cotton fabric is generally a bit thicker too, adding to its warmth.

At Piglet in Bed, our brushed cotton and cotton bedding both start with the same high-quality cotton fabric, but it’s that extra brushing process that gives brushed cotton the edge when it comes to warmth and cosiness.
How should you care for brushed cotton bedding?
Caring for brushed cotton bedding could not be easier. Simply wash at 40 degrees Celsius, then air or tumble dry. At Piglet, we think life is too short for ironing, so if you want smooth sheets, the best way is to give them a good shake after they come out of the washing machine, then hang them up carefully to dry rather than tumble drying.

Whether you opt for the cosy feel of brushed cotton fabric, the classic comfort of cotton sheets, or the low-maintenance look of linen bedding, the decision ultimately comes down to personal preference. But whatever you pick, don’t be surprised if you find any excuse to stay snuggled under the covers a little longer each morning!
