Basketweave towels - Towel Care Tips

Towels: Our Top Care Tips

There is nothing better than the feeling of fresh towels. Stepping out of your steaming shower and into a fluffy hug, but we want that super soft feeling to last, right? We’ve gathered some top tips to keep your new towels beautifully soft so you can maintain that plush feeling as long as possible.

Do I need to break-in my new towels?

It's personal preference as to whether or not you choose to wash your towels before their first use. If you decide to, wash using one cup of vinegar or a mild detergent on a gentle cycle; this will ensure your towels are more absorbent before use.

Top tips for washing towels

You want your towels to remain as fluffy as the day you bought them, so it’s important to follow some simple steps to keep them as plush as possible. We recommend separating your light towels from darks, as well as washing separately from clothing to avoid lint transferring onto other fabrics.

Load up your washing machine (about ¾ full) and add ½ cup of white vinegar. The vinegar gets rid of detergent build-up, keeping your towels super soft. Avoid using fabric softeners too, as these can leave a coating on the towels, making them less absorbent.

Use a small amount of good quality detergent and wash on 40° on a regular wash to get rid of any germs.

You can tumble dry on low or airdry and once dried, give them a good shake to fluff up the fabric fibres to ensure they remain soft. Avoid harsh chemicals and bleach when caring for your towels as they can alter the fibres and reduce the towel’s lifespan.

The biggest towel drying mistakes to avoid

To ensure your towels last as long as possible, there are some things to avoid that could affect their longevity. Once you’ve stepped out of the shower or bath, rather than rubbing your towel against your skin vigorously, gently pat against the skin – this will help to keep the towel fibres intact and you won’t receive a double exfoliation!

After use, be sure to hang your towel in a well-ventilated space to ensure they dry thoroughly. If towels remain damp for too long, they can develop a musty odour, and nobody wants that.

If you prefer to put your towels into a tumble-dryer, ensure they’re on a medium-low heat to prolong the fibres and don’t overfill the machine, so they dry properly.

What to consider when buying towels

First determine your needs: are they for everyday use, taking to the beach, or for when guests stay over? If you’re looking for an everyday use, perhaps a higher GSM (grams per square meter), will be more suitable. The higher the GSM, the thicker and more absorbent the towel. Our towels range from 500-700 GSM, with our Organic Cotton Towels coming in at the highest GSM.

Towels come in a range of sizes, from face cloths and hand towels to bath towels and sheets, so choose a suitable size to fit your needs. You can find our towel size guide just here.

There is a range of fabrics towels are available in. Our favourite towel fabric is cotton as they’re gentle to your skin, long-lasting and absorbent.

How to bring white towels back to life (and keep them that way)

There’s nothing worse than white towels losing their sparkle, so to bring back their whiteness and maintain brightness by pre-treating stains with a stain remover before washing. Baking soda is great natural stain remover as it acts as a brightener and helps to deodorise fabrics. Other natural treatments can work wonders to keep your towels bright. Try adding ½ cup of lemon juice or white vinegar directly into the drum followed by a small amount of detergent, before loading in your towels as the acids help break down soapy residue.

Opt for sun-drying white towels rather than the tumble-dryer as sunlight has natural bleaching properties to help keep your whites stay white. Wash your towels regularly to keep them fresh and prevent any stains from settling in.
