As the season begins to shift and we welcome the cooler months ahead, it’s time to lovingly usher away our summer bedding, ensuring we refresh and preserve it for the coming months. Whether you’re swapping out lighter tog duvets or storing away guest bedding now that the summer holidays are over, here are five ways to maintain our signature quality and supple feel while they’re tucked away.
1. Wash Before You Store
Before packing away your duvet covers, sheets and pillowcases, give them a gentle clean to remove oils, sweat, and dust. We recommend washing most bedding at 40°C, opting for a natural detergent and skipping that fabric conditioner, which can coat fibres and reduce breathability. Line dry your linens where possible - or tumble dry low for a soft finish straight away. For our full guide on drying your linens, head here.
We don’t recommend machine-washing wool bedding. Instead, take advantage of the final few weeks of summer by airing your duvets in the sunshine. Bring down your heavier winter bedding too, giving it a good refresh outdoors before the seasonal swap. Sunlight naturally sterilises wool, wicks away trapped moisture, and helps the fibres expand - revitalising pillows and duvets so they bounce back to life.
2. Embrace Natural, Breathable Fabrics
Whether it’s 100% heritage linen, pure cotton, or the signature linen-cotton blend, natural bedding stores beautifully - especially in breathable storage conditions. Linen’s relaxed texture naturally softens with time, while cotton stays crisp. Store them loosely folded inside a well-ventilated linen bag or pillow case to maintain airflow and softness.
3. Support Your Duvets & Pillows
Piglet in Bed’s wool duvets and pillows - crafted with Merino or British wool encased in 100% cotton - are designed to regulate temperature wonderfully. To preserve lofty comfort:
-
Give them room to breathe - avoid compressing under heavy items.
-
Use breathable storage bags - not airtight plastic - to let moisture escape and ensure the fibres maintain natural fluff.
-
Add a sachet of dried lavender or cedar blocks inside to fend off mildew and keep your linens fresh.
4. Label & Organise by Season
Label your storage to make seasonal swap seamless. Store higher tog duvets, quilts and blankets ready for winter, while your lighter duvets, flat sheets and linens are within easy reach for warmer months. This way, your bedding collection stays functional, tidy, and ready to layer according to comfort and the UK’s temperamental temperatures.
5. Refresh Mid-Storage
If you’re storing bedding for months, plan a mid-storage refresh:
-
Shake or air items outside to reinvigorate scent and breathability.
-
If needed, rewash lightly and ensure they fully dry before returning to storage.
-
Linen lovers: treat clothes to gentle folding to preserve that beautifully crinkled, lived-in feel.
Storing bedding isn’t just about putting items away - it’s about caring for quality pieces that complement your lifestyle year-round. Natural fibres like linen, cotton, and wool not only look timeless but also reward you, season after season, with enduring softness and comfort. Proper storage keeps them breathable, fresh, and inviting, ready for your next seasonal switch up.
