The Piglet Playbook: Designing with Yellow

The Piglet Playbook: Designing with Yellow

Welcome to The Piglet Playbook – a series where our in-house experts share thoughtful interior wisdom for everyday spaces, helping you create a home that feels both considered and lived in.

This month, our stylist Kate is talking all things yellow. From picking the right shade to suit the mood, to how different yellows behave in different spaces, she’s sharing everything you need to know about using the colour in your home.

Statement Yellows

Even with a shift towards softer, butter-like hues, statement yellow remains a classic and powerful design choice. Saffron, marigold and mustard bring energy and personality into a room – they feel confident, expressive, and a little more unapologetic than neutral schemes.

Used on walls, it instantly creates impact, while smaller accents like cushions, throws, or a headboard introduce colour without taking over. Balanced with neutral bedding in white, beige, taupe, or even rhubarb, yellow feels clean rather than chaotic. For more contrast, a vibrant accent adds playfulness, while warm woods or mahogany tones soften and ground the intensity.

The Softer Side of Yellow

Butter yellow sits on the other end of the scale. It behaves almost like a neutral – warm, without visual noise. Its soft, creamy undertone works well in light-filled, airy spaces – particularly bedrooms where colour should feel calming and restful rather than dominant.

Unlike deeper yellows, it keeps spaces feeling fresh rather than heavy. Even in smaller or darker rooms, it helps lift the space without trying too hard. It also works well with other muted tones – pale blues, soft greens – keeping the palette calm and balanced.

Decorating with Depth

Yellow really comes into its own when you it isn’t treated as a single flat colour. Butter yellow, ochre, mustard – they can all sit together in the same space. The result is more depth, less flatness, and a sense that the room has evolved rather than been decorated in one go.

Butter yellow works well as a base because it’s light and easy to live with, while richer tones introduce contrast and interest, creating a cohesive look with added dimension.

An easy way to bring this in is through bedding, mixing soft butter yellow sheets with patterned duvet covers within the same hue. From there, introduce richer tones through cushions, throws or a headboard. Tonal wallpaper also works well when you want subtle variation without breaking the flow.

Yellow Overhead

Extending yellow onto the ceiling shifts it from a neutral background surface into an active part of the room’s composition, changing how a space feels. A soft, pale yellow creates a gentle glow that makes a room feel brighter, taller and more uplifting without feeling stark.

In contrast, deeper tones such as ochre or muted mustard bring a sense of intimacy when used overhead, visually lowering the ceiling and making larger spaces feel more enclosed and cosy. When yellow is used more widely across a room, cooler accents like faded blues in bedding or soft furnishings help balance the warmth and keep the overall scheme feeling grounded.

The Joy of Yellow

The beauty of yellow is in its versatility. It can completely change the feel of a space, all depending on the shade you choose. Whether you're drawn to rich mustard tones or softer butter hues, the key is to layer depth and warmth as you go. Take your time with it, experiment with different tones, and you'll create a space that feels both warm, balanced and full of character.
