Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Earth day is an international celebration; raising awareness about the importance of protecting our environment, recognising the beauty that surrounds us and to help promote more sustainable practices that will aid in preserving our planet for future generations.

We’re avid believers that nature provides a wealth of resources and are therefore committed to using natural fabrics and materials that are sustainably-sourced and have a long lifecycle. In aid of celebrating Earth Day, here you’ll find the sustainable features found within our range; from the initiatives we source through, to the buttons we use on our linen bedding and cotton bedding collections. Happy Earth Day, Piglets!

No surprises here, we are linen’s biggest cheerleaders. Not only do we love the crumpled, well-loved look, linen has an abundance of sustainable features. Linen is made from the fibres of the flax plant, a blue flowered crop which is most commonly found across Western Europe. Every part of this pretty (but mighty) plant is used within linen production so there is zero wastage across the process. It also requires minimal fertiliser and very little additional water given it relies on natural irrigation - rainwater. It’s also completely biodegradable so eventually after plenty of years of love and passing down to the next generation, the fabric will biodegrade naturally rather than sitting in landfill.

Owing to the fact it is made in small quantities and flax is a hard fibre to work with, linen is an expensive material to produce. While linen sheets will cost more than synthetic fabrics initially, it will also long outlive non-natural alternatives that will need replacing after a couple of years. When good quality linen made from European flax is cared for properly (which is minimal you’ll be pleased to hear!) your linen can last for decades, ensuring less waste and ultimately less consumption. It’s worth considering the cost-per-sleep ratio on that basis.

All of our linen and cotton bedding is Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Certified. This ensures that your bedding is free of any nasty chemicals and toxins that could be potentially harmful to both health and the environment. We spend an awful lot of time beneath the sheets, so it's imperative they’re clear of harmful substances that could be absorbed by your skin. All elements of our linen bedding bundles are made from natural materials. This is even down to the buttons secured onto our duvet covers. On all of our cotton products, we use corozo buttons; made from the nuts of Tagua trees, and harvested naturally to avoid deforestation. Our linen products use buttons made from coconut shell - generally considered a waste by-product of the food industry.

The cotton we use for both our cotton bedding and cotton towels are all made from 100% ethically sourced cotton, in partnership with the Better Cotton Initiative. Better Cotton is the world’s largest cotton sustainability programme with the aim of helping cotton communities thrive while protecting and restoring the environment.

Made for all year round natural comfort, our duvets, mattress toppers and pillows are made by hand and filled with carded Merino sheep's wool which is encased in 100% organic cotton. These materials have been specially selected to help regulate your temperature, allowing for a restful night's sleep. Merino wool is one of our favourite fabrics, owing to its thermoregulating abilities, keeping you cosy when it’s cold and cool when it’s warm.

You’ll also find merino wool used in our range of woollen blankets. They’re made in Yorkshire using traditional methods from the finest merino wool, a renewable resource that comes from shearing sheep. It’s biodegradable, a long-lasting material and can be recycled or upcycled after years of love and use.

Here at Piglet, we strive to be an authentically sustainable company, contributing to a green, circular, people-centred economy for all.
