In Praise of The Pause

Carl Honoré, author of In Praise of Slowness, writes ‘Speed can be fun, productive and powerful and we would be poorer without it […] The secret is balance; instead of doing everything faster, do everything at the right speed. Sometimes fast. Sometimes slow. Sometimes in between’.

August is wellness month and if we have learnt anything over the past 18 months, it that learning to slow down is so important for our health. Realising the power of the pause has been a game changer: we can’t (and mustn't) always push ourselves to go faster. It’s exhausting, inefficient and unsustainable. When we slow down we allow ourselves to create, organise our thoughts and allow more space in our lives for the things that bring us enjoyment. 

For many of us, our lives include working all week (often with a daily stressful commute) then spending our weekends being busy, socialising and doing all the life admin we can't do at work. We aren’t saying there is anything wrong with this, however a lot of people have reported they have felt calmer and more grounded from taking time and slowing down. 


At Piglet, the majority of us work remotely and are based all over the world. We wanted to share with you some of the everyday rituals that we have implemented into our lives since the pandemic began. For a lot of us we have continued these new habits as the world open up, grateful that they have allowed us to enjoy finding pleasure in ‘the pause’.  

Early morning commuting and stressful school runs have now been replaced with early morning coffee and walks in nature, sitting down and enjoying family meals together and learning new skills such as making bread and trying new recipes.

Other mindful activities have included, journalling, meditation, evening walks, gardening, replacing phone calls with video calls and learning how powerful an at-home workout can be.
